Do Hasidic Jews use smartphones? The answer: some Hasidic Jews do, particularly those that work in business.
Although, it’s important to note that as a general rule, the Hasidic community frowns upon Internet and Smartphone use.
Hasidic leaders see Internet and smartphones as dangerous for many reasons. Two reasons that come to mind immediately:
- The internet is full of adult content, which the Hasidic community considers to be immodest and sinful.
- Smartphones give people access to a large variety of secular content, which to a large extent, Hasidim consider to be heretical. Examples of heretical content include subjects like Evolution, biblical criticism, and the European and Jewish Enlightenment. With smartphones, content on these subjects are at the tip of anyone’s fingers.
So, why do some Hasidic Jews use smartphones?
Hasidic leaders permit Hasidic businessmen (through a heter) to use smartphones because they are necessary to make a living. However, many Hasidic leaders insist that Hasidic smartphone users employ a “Kosher filter” to prevent access to adult and other inappropriate content.
