In my introduction to the hasidic sect of Toldos Aharon I discussed the “Takanot” (decrees) that Toldos Aharon hasidim must keep in order to be a part of the group. It is not without reason that I referred to Toldos Aharon hasidim as modern day Essenes. They are in my opinion, the most strict group of Jews in modern day Judaism. And the takanot play a huge role in that.
The takanot were created by Reb Arele and other Toldos Aharon Rebbes. Takanot continue to be created today by the current Toldos Aharon Rebbe. Two examples of Takanot include: 1. Toldos Aharon hasidim must pick one day a week (not including shabbos) that they may not smoke cigarettes. 2. All Toldos Aharon men (that live in Jerusalem) are required to daven at the main Toldos Aharon beis medrash in Meah Shearim on shabbos morning.
A sefer called “Takanot Vehadrachot” has a detailed list of the takanot, although it does not include more recent takanot. Here is a picture of the sefer:
The takanot are crucial for understanding the Toldos Aharon sect since the takanot to a large degree, define their way of life. In future posts, I hope to discuss some of the takanot in more detail.
